| Q | How can the same author write books and articles on both Design and Technology? |
| A | That is an easy question, but the answer may prove difficult for some. For a long time many people have subscribed to the idea that artistic people cannot understand technology and technically oriented people cannot grasp aesthetic principles. Hogwash! From my experience as an educator I have found that understanding comes from the method of presentation. If the designer approaches technology as a design tool, it suddenly makes sense. If a techy looks at design concepts as a system for presentation (another tool) they can get a solid foundation on how to apply them to any project. Instead of dismissing some bit of knowledge as outside of your area, just figure out a way that it works for you. |
| Q | How important do you think the field of semiotics plays in new media design? |
| A | I think semiotics is very important. Can you create effective projects without even knowing what semiotics is? Certainly! But semiotics is about how we communicate and a working knowledge of semiotic principles can really help, especially since communication is the foundation of any media project. |
| Q | Are you going to write another book? If so, what will the subject be? |
| A | I am certain there will be another. As long as people are interested in design and media there will be a need for books that keep pace with the evolution of both. |
| Q | Do you give seminars or speaking events? Will you be coming to X anytime soon? |
| A | Yes, as my schedule allows. As far as any specific location, announcements are generally made in that area. |
| Q | Where do you think interactive media is headed? What will be the next big development? |
| A | My usual answer for this used to "portability", but with all the advances in handheld devices like cell phones and media players, I would say that we have arrived. So the next big thing will be "user" production of media content. For a long time we were dependent upon big corporations to produce our media, but now technology has given that power to the individual. This trend has already started, but it still has a long way to go. |
