In some work, James uses the human figure and aircraft illustration interchangeably. He sees this approach as a visual metaphor and allegory for the human condition- both mentally and in physical space.

In this piece, the female figure depicts the outline of an aircraft in flight and is "painted" in the same style as the 1000th Sopwith Camel produced in 1918. The paint scheme of this famous aircraft was inspired by Egyptian studies fashionable at the time.
